How to Plan a Large Birthday Party-Part 2: Decorations
So you've chosen the theme for your party, created an itinerary for the birthday party, sent out invitations and are now waiting for RSVPs. What to do, what to do? It's time to start getting decorations!
I wanted to activate sight the second my guests walked into the room where I was hosting the first part of my birthday celebration and I knew there was only one decoration company that could bring my vision to life; Oriental Trading! This company has party supplies, crafts, and party decorations for absolutely ANY occasion. Since I wanted to bring my Mardi Gras meets Masquerade theme to life, I ordered a metallic gold door curtain to hang at my door so it screamed "party time" as soon as my guests stepped up
and I ordered the Mardi Gras Design-A-Room Set. It was simple to use, all I did was unravel the set, obtain adhesive tape, and stuck it to the walls of my party room. This look really enhanced the theme!
The Mardi Gras Design-A-Room Set also came with 'people' that you could also stick to the walls which I thought was so cool and a must have.
What is a Mardi Gras meets Masquerade party without masks? On one of the nights of the party I wanted to incorporate masks. But, not just any masks; I wanted masks that could be easily taken on and off and not tamper with my guests' faces and hair. So I decided to get beautiful hand masks also from Oriental Trading.
As I constantly say, choosing three main colors to match your theme makes buying and creating decorations so much easier. The three main colors I chose for my party were gold, purple, & green. The hard thing about a Mardi Gras meets Masquerade theme is that there are a lot of color variations like royal purple, dark purple, light purple etc. so if you can stick to two or three stores that have your exact colors that is the safest route to go. For me I stuck with three: Oriental Trading, Michaels and Party City
Since Michaels and Party City were local stores, I used them to fulfill quick, basic decor needs like helium for my balloons, streamers, arts & crafts supplies, and cutlery/napkins/cups.
Remember in my HELLO KITTY Baby Shower blog I discussed the importance of MINOR DETAILS? Though I fulfilled my decor vision with physically bought decorations, I still needed to create decorations of my own that would serve as minor details. Stay tuned to see all the ways in which I implemented minor details!

Tickle Me ELMO Birthday Party
My next all time favorite birthday party is an Elmo Birthday Party all the way down in Brazil! Mog & Mug posted this lovely party she threw for her son, and though it was written in Spanish, it was not hard to tell how much thought was put into this amazing party. She stuck to a theme with the colors of red and all things Elmo being employed throughout the decorations from the food to her high and low focal points
She activated many of the senses I continue to talk about. Check it out!
The dessert table had beautiful tablecloth patterns. Just because her main theme color was red, she manipulated it with polka dots, a damask cloth, and the white and yellow color to contrast it. I love it!
Focusing on the desserts, she dressed them up perfectly! One of my favorite places to shop when looking for things to dress up my food is ETSY.
Remember in one of my Cake of the Day entries I discussed fondant icing? It really can make your desserts stand out. Below, Mog & Mug baked what looked like scrumptious Elmo cupcakes and cookie "lollipops". To find out how to make fondant for your next treat click here!
Now that I am a little nostalgic on my Sesame Street days I am going to grab a bowl of cereal and sit in front of the TV in my PJs like the old days! I hope you enjoyed reading about this amazing birthday party and come back to view the rest of my favorite birthday parties in preparation for my big birthday bash at the end of the week!

Barbie Birthday Party!!
The week is here! IT'S MY BIRTHDAY WEEK! Just as I promised I will be featuring some of my favorite birthday parties to date! First up, I bring to you a birthday party for one of the most GLAMOROUS woman I know....Barbie!
Colin Cowie is a South African lifestyle guru and party planner to the stars, television personality and writer and was the brains behind this "Real" Life-Size Barbie Dream House for Barbie's 50th Birthday. The event took place in Malibu, CA and it was nothing short of fabulous. The following photos are courtesy of HWTM. Let's walk the Pink Carpet and see how Colin Cowie brought this party to life!
It is quite clear that when choosing the theme colors for this party it was pink, pink, and MORE PINK. In every room in Barbie's Dream house a tribute to Barbie and everything pink is conveyed.
From her pink bedroom designed by famous interior designer, Jason Adler...
To the lavish living room designed by Jason Adler as well!
My absolute favorite part of the party theme were the decorations found poolside!
Below you will find the Barbie dessert table and the bar. The bar was decorated with over 750 Barbie dolls!
The desserts they had looked so scrumptious, from the mini cupcakes to their rendition of s'mores which they lit near the fire pit.
A nice DIY (do it yourself) would be the centerpieces placed on the tables.
These unique centerpieces were displayed on lucite tables filled with thousands of mini Barbie shoes, brushes, and purses.
But of course, what is a Barbie birthday party without her cute pink ride?! This hot pink, custom VW bug was built just for Barbie-they even put a vanity mirror in it!
Talk about the ultimate birthday party for the books! Stay tuned for more of my favorite birthday parties as we do the countdown till my big birthday bash ;-)
